What is Batterers Intervention Program?

A Batterers Intervention Program (BIP) is a structured, court-mandated or voluntary counseling program designed for individuals who have used violence or abusive behaviors in intimate relationships. The program focuses on accountability, behavior change, and victim safety rather than anger management alone. Participants attend group sessions where they examine beliefs about power and control, learn healthy relationship skills, and develop non-violent communication strategies. Facilitators challenge harmful attitudes, promote empathy, and emphasize personal responsibility for abusive actions. Programs typically last several months and follow evidence-based models. The primary goals are to reduce reoffending, increase survivor safety, and promote respectful, non-abusive relationships.
